Gus Dur's political legacy in Indonesia will be as a key leader of the reform movement and the President who created, if not intentionally, the bridge to the selection by Indonesia's parliament and the later election of Megawati Sukarnoputri, whose ascendance signified the end of the Soeharto era and the entrenchment of democracy in Indonesia. Many would argue that Wahid's maneuvering and political opportunism, which resulted in his becoming President in October 1999 even though his party held almost two-thirds fewer votes that that of his fellow reformer Megawati, only delayed Megawati's ultimate arrival in Merdeka Square. Others could make that case that his intervention and indeed his term in office from October 1999 to 2001, was a necessary step in Indonesia's path to democracy and that without his leadership, the Indonesian military may have stepped in and strangled the democratic movement in its crib. This is why he is regarded as the Founder father of Indonesia.

I agree with the statement above. The late Gus Dur is a brave, fair and just leader who championed democracy through his words and actions. During his term in office, he was very particular that freedom of religion exists and true democracy are not just mere words. One example is that he himself fight for the rights of the persecuted Ahmadiyya Muslims which made him being remembered by many as a courageous, unbiased, and sympathetic leader who sacrificed his presidency in order to ensure true democracy exists in Indonesia. When he passed away, many feels like they lost a shield that protect Indonesia from the forces that is breaking the nation apart. Despite not being able to see the world, the late Gus Dur left the world with a great example of a courageous trait for everyone to follow. Which is to always be proactive and march forward whenever and wherever democracy is under attacked and make the right decision even if it means losing one
