In everyday language, "threat" and "risk" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings.

Threat. A threat is a specific, identifiable danger or hazard that can cause harm or damage. It's often something that can be pinpointed, like a physical danger, a security breach, or a specific challenge. Threats are typically seen as negative and something to be mitigated or avoided.

Risk, on the other hand, is the likelihood or probability of a negative event or outcome occurring. It's a measure of the uncertainty or unpredictability of a situation. Risks can be calculated, managed, and mitigated, but they're not always avoidable.

To illustrate the difference:

A burglar breaking into your home is a threat.
The likelihood of a burglar breaking into your home due to a faulty lock is a risk.

The threat is an exposure while risk is aforementioned or projected threat.
